This 1950s black taffeta ball dress by quality British brand Blanes, is perfect for a black or white tie event. It has ribbon work appliqué around the folded square neckline and bottom hemline, with a fitted, Princess seamed bodice and full skirt. The top section of the dress is carefully boned internally in black muslin cotton to create a flattering, nipped in silhouette - very typical of the era. The embroidery and ribbon-work is comprised of soft pink stylised English roses, each with red gemstone detail to the centre and green leaves to the outer edges. The front lower section of the dress has a larger rose design, with a deep flounce to the bottom of the skirt and the heavy pleating gives an amazing sense of volume and movement when worn. It fastens at the rear with the original metal zip, concealed by a placket.
Made up of a lovely soft black faille material, it is very comfortable for the wearer and would best fit around a UK 10-12, or US size 6-8. It is in very good vintage condition overall; if we are being picky, some of the ribbon petals are looking a little bit tired and tinged with minor discoloration but it does not detract from the beauty and impact of the overall garment.
